Considering how little screen time and focus there will be on this effect, I began to wonder if it's worth the render time costs to use deformation to create a groove in the ground. This time around I set up the particles in an attempt to of build up the ground along the sides his path rather than actually pushing the ground down in his path. I already see some things I want to change, but let me know what does/doesn't work.

That looks so cool! I really like it. The only thing I'd want to add is more of a billowing snow cloud behind him. Sorta like the image below, but more stylized...
