From our meeting this past Saturday (10/23/2010) we made some changes to story and collected some excellent ways to make our existing shots a lot stronger. Just so everyone is on the same page, here is a synopsis of the new story we will be making into the next animatic:

The beginning is the same, with Mahaka setting out from his house to catch some fish for his family. Mahaka walks out into the main ravine/walkway area on his way to the fishing area. On the way, however, he trips over something. He looks down to find Ruru's stuffed walrus. He picks it up and looks around for the owner. He then spots Ariki and Ruru building a snowman on the ridge of the village play area. He gives the walrus back, then starts to head back to his duties. His two friends stop him and get him to help them build more snowmen.

Time passes. (We can show the change in time by showing the light direction changing on the snowmen)

Mahaka realizes how much time has passed. Frustrated, he hurries off to the fishing area, but in his haste he leaves his basket behind. His friends see the basket and go to return it to him. On the way, Ruru drops his walrus again in the main walkway area. When the friends get to the fishing area, Mahaka is already busy fishing and is working on reeling in his first fish. He doesn't notice Ariki and Ruru coming up behind him with the basket. Mahaka only notices when they are looming behind him. They startle him and cause him to lose the fish he was reeling in. Again frustrated, he snatches the basket from his friends and shoos them away.

More time passes.

Mahaka has filled his basket with fish, and begins the trek back home. On his way through the main walkway area, Mahaka trips on Ruru's walrus again and spills the fish all over the place. Before he can recover and collect the fish, a group of penguins slide through and snatch them all up (in addition, we can have the penguins looming around in the previous scenes to foreshadow this event). His friends, who had been back in the play area, come down to meet him and make sure he is okay. Mahaka has had enough and throws down his fishing pole. Leaving his fishing equipment behind, he walks home empty handed and defeated. Ariki and Ruru watch him walk off, looking sad and guilty. They then look down at the equipment, and back to each other.

More time passes.

The ending would then be the same as the current one.

So this will be what I'll be working on boarding for the next presentation! Personally, I really like the changes that have been made, and I believe a happy medium has been found. If there are any questions, comments, or suggestions, make sure to voice them!
